“The Last Unicorn” came out in 1982. I was 6 years old when I last saw it. Now a mere 3 days from my thirtieth birthday, I watched it again.
This was a formative movie for me. I was almost afraid to watch it again, fearing I would be disappointed and all those magical feelings I had while watching it as a girl would be dispelled and somehow lessened. It wasn’t the case though and I enjoyed it as much as ever. I realize too how much this movie influences me even today, especially in my art, I recognize my Farfalla character having many similar characteristics to the unicorn character in the movie.
So I had to do a bit of fanart for this great film, this is my own version of the part of story where the unicorn hears for the first time of the redbull and how it herded all the unicorns into the sea. I really couldn’t stand that annoying little moth/butterfly character and thought that cool, creepy owl from “The Secret of Nimh” would have been much better in the role. Anyways, it’s my picture, I can make happen whatever I’d like to happen. Nyah! ^_^
And yay for making art again, I never have time for it these days.
Re-watching The Last Unicorn for the 25th anniversary release honestly brought tears to my eyes. In that opening song by America. I was so shocked, I didn't know what to think. Like you said, all the memories and magic flooded back to me. It was beautiful. Thanks for this!
I totally love the owl from Nimh better than the butterfly. The butterfly was just an extra annoying character for me, he didn't really have any effect on how the movie turned out. Nice artwork, I loved it!
They could never have used the NIMH owl in The Last Unicorn anyway. Copyright issues. Plus I doubt the writer of The Last Unicorn would have liked the butterfly character to be replaced by another.
These are my all time favorite movies from childhood. The contrast between the unicorn and the great owl is fantastic. And I hated that butterfly too xD
Nice artwork, I loved it!
