That's one classy pooch!

Journal Entry: Mon Apr 27, 2009, 9:14 PM

Alright, I’ve been trying to capture this on video for a while now, Olive, my French Bulldog does this all the time but never when I have the camera handy.  It’s been a long time since I inflicted Olive videos on you so don’t complain!

This first one shows her dragging her belly back and forth on the carpet.  The first time I saw her doing this she was outside by the fence and I about had a heart attack because I thought she had broke her back or something.  Nope, she just thinks it’s fun!  Her favorite time to do this is first thing in the morning when she gets out of bed.

And this is her famous butt drag.  It’s real classy when she follows this up by smelling the carpet where she just dragged her butt.  She’s high class I tell ya!

Edit:  Just wanted to add a note.  I’m a veterinarian and I take good care for my dogs.   They don’t have worms and I regularly express their anal glands myself.  Olive scoots because she likes it not because of any health issue that’s not being addressed.  Don’t worry!

It’s super classy when she turns around and sniffs it! Like those dogs that scratch their ears then smell and lick the nasty from their foot like it’s yummers or something. I’m a veterinarian so I take good care of Olive’s anal glands and of course she doesn’t have worms. She likes to scoot her bum on the ground when she comes in from going potty, we are always sure to wipe her first with a baby whip so it doesn’t end up on our carpet.

:puke:  Ewww don't you just love it! I work for a vet plus am an EMT/Fire Fighter so I get to deal with the nastiness on both ends! Kids, elderly people and animals have no shame and I think it's great.:) Makes my day go by with a smile.:)

She's got selective deafness, pretty good at ignoring me when it suits her!

I thought that dogs that drag their butt on the ground usually have worms or some sort of anal discomfort (impacted rectum I think?). Do some dogs do it just because? I don't think I've heard of wolves ever doing it in the wild.

Just want to mention, I'm not accusing you of anything, I'm just curious. Don't want anyone to take it the wrong way...

I can tell you are just concerned and trying to be helpful, so no bad feelings. It’s okay though, I’m a veterinarian and my dogs have regular fecal exams and dewormings and I express their anal glands myself. Olive just likes dragging her bum on the ground, she also has a funny shaped tail and tends to get poop stuck on her. So she tries to wipe it off. That’s why we have to wipe her bum with baby wipes when she comes in from going potty! Gotta love dogs!
